Common Questions

Q: What makes a good soap?

A: It all starts with the perfect combination of oils. The oils make up the soap base, and then your perfect base must be turned in to soap using precision production techniques. Something as simple as having a temperature off by just 4 degrees, can make the difference between producing good soap rather than world class soap. Hardness (durability), lather quality (both fluffiness and stability), and moisturizing ability is the trifecta. These different properties come from the fatty acids which make up the molecules of the organic oils we use as. Unfortunately, the fatty acids that are moisturizing, don’t give you a good lather, and the ones that make a great lather are not moisturizing. A perfect bar soap is the result of carefully balancing the right fatty acids to maximize the bar’s hardness, lather quality, and moisturizing ability. Still confused? Q: Are your soaps Certified Organic?

A: Yes. Our soaps are Certified Organic under the USDA’s National Organic Program. Organic certification is a rigorous professional standard that must be validated and re-issued annually. Many skin care companies claim to sell organic products but are not. Without certification, they are actually in breach of national policy, and, technically, they are not allowed to make the organic claim. The official organic certification of our ingridents assures our customers that our product, our facility, and our procedures, truly support our organic status.

Q: What is the difference between “organic” and “all natural”?

A: In simple terms, “all natural”, although a step in the right direction, does not have as strict requirements as “Certified Organic”. In fact in some cases “all natural” is only a marketing term. Be sure to read the ingredients!

Natural soap to us, means a soap whose ingredients are plant based, and we further define our product as an herbal soap. We oppose the body care industry’s use of the word “natural” to include synthetic fragrances, colorants, and preservatives. We add no artificial substances to our soaps, such as synthetic fragrances, dyes, and preservatives, and where possible, we use organically grown products. Our purely herbal soap is scented with essential oils only and colored with organic herbs and plant extracts only. The soap base recipe is made from 100% certified organic oils. Our products contain no parabens.

Q: Why is organic better?

A: This is our favorite questions! From beginning of the production cycle to end, organic products are better for your skin, your family’s health, the soil, our water, and the planet. From your sink to the ocean, there’s no better way to be a part of a healthier future then with organic. The process of organic certification itself can be daunting and expensive. No one forced certification on us, we choose this because it’s the right thing to do – make the best product possible, do it every day, and by committing to third-party certification, assuring customers that our science and our marketing are true. As a result, you end up with a much higher quality product.

Q: Do your soaps contain lye?

A: No, none of our soaps contain lye.

Q: Does your soaps contain SLS?

A: No. SLS (sodium laurel sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate) and other surfactants are often added to soaps to increase lather quality. They are commonly found in soaps, including many marketed as natural soaps, as well as glycerin soaps, liquid soaps, and shampoos. As synthetic compounds, SLS and other surfactants dry out your skin and, for many people, cause irritation. We use neither SLS nor any other surfactants. We don’t believe in cost-cutting short cuts. Instead, we prefer to focus on making a high quality soap from organic oils that don’t depend on synthetic lather enhancers. We carefully balance the oils in our base recipe to provide the proper fatty acid mix for a wonderful, rich – and most importantly – completely natural lather.

Q: Do your soaps contain animal fat?

A: No. None of our soaps or bases contain any type of animal fat.

Q: Where is the soap made?

A: Made in the U.S.A!

Q: How do your Soaps get all its colors?

A: Our colors come from 100% plant ingredients. In most cases, herbs provide the color, and some essential oils also contribute to color. No synthetic dies are used.

Q: What do you use to scent your soap?

A: We use 100% pure essential oils. Our soaps contain ZERO synthetic fragrances. This is one of the most common misrepresentations among natural products, especially for natural soap. Essential oils are pure plant extracts used for scenting or aromatherapy. On the other hand, “Fragrance oils” are synthetically made substitutes for essential oils. Many soaps, EVEN those labeled “natural”, contain fragrance oils. Often, a soap label will say “contains essential oils.” However, such a label can be deceiving — it is always important to check if it ALSO contains fragrance oils. Fragrance oils are problematic because, as synthetic compounds, they dry out your skin and irritate sensitive skin. All our soaps, contain only true, plant-extract essential oils. As always, read a product’s label. If the ingredients includes the word “fragrance,” “perfume,” or “parfum,” then it’s synthetic and not-natural, even though its packaging may say it is a natural soap.
